The Complete Wig Care Routine: Wash, Condition, Store

Human hair wigs last years or months — the difference is care. The full routine: how often to wash, what products actually matter, and how to store it.

A human hair wig has no scalp to feed it oils, so everything it needs has to come from you. A simple routine doubles its lifespan.

How often to wash

Every 7–10 wears, or when product builds up and the hair stops moving freely. Over-washing dries the hair; under-washing makes it limp and tangled.

The wash, step by step

1. Detangle first with a wide-tooth comb, ends to roots, before the hair ever touches water.

2. Shampoo downward. Lukewarm water, sulfate-free shampoo, smooth it down the hair shaft. Never rub or pile the hair on top of your hand — that is how mats form.

3. Condition generously, mid-lengths to ends, and leave it in for 5–10 minutes. The lace and knots get no conditioner — it loosens them.

4. Rinse cool, blot, never wring. Press water out with a towel.

Drying

Air dry on a wig stand whenever possible. If you blow-dry, use heat protectant and medium heat, directing airflow down the shaft.

Storage

On a stand or mannequin head, away from sunlight and humidity. Traveling? Braid long wigs loosely and pack in a satin bag. Never store a wig damp — that is how mildew and odor start.

The one-product rule: if you buy nothing else, buy a light leave-in conditioner. It solves dryness, tangling and shine in one step.
