An ill-fitting cap is the number one reason wigs slip, pinch or look bulky. Measuring takes five minutes and only needs a soft sewing tape measure.
The five measurements
1. Circumference. Wrap the tape around your hairline: forehead, behind the ears, nape, back to the front. This is the primary size number.
2. Front to nape. From the center of your front hairline, over the crown, to the nape.
3. Ear to ear (over the top). From the top of one ear, over the crown, to the other.
4. Ear to ear (across the forehead). Along the front hairline from ear to ear.
5. Nape width. Across the nape where the wig ends.
Reading the chart
Average caps fit a 21.5–22.5 inch circumference, which covers most adults. Under 21.5 is petite; over 22.5 is large. Adjustable straps in the cap give you roughly an inch of play in either direction.
Fit checks when your wig arrives
The cap should feel snug, not tight. You should fit one flat finger under the band. If the ear tabs sit in front of your ears, the cap is too big; if it rides up at the nape, too small.
Tip: braid or slick your hair flat before measuring — bulk under the tape is the most common measuring mistake.
